Old Testament Quotations in the New Testament, Part 36

“Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its environs, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the magi. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, ‘A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; and she refused to be comforted, because they were no more.’ ” Matthew 2:18

This Old Testament quote by Matthew, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is drawn from Jeremiah 31:15. The NAS version of this verse reads, “Thus says the LORD, ‘A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.’ ”

Old Testament Quotations in the New Testament, Part 35

“Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen; My Beloved in whom My soul is well-pleased; I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel, nor cry out; nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets. A battered reed He will not break off, and a smoldering wick He will not put out, until He leads justice to victory. And in His name the Gentiles will hope.”  Matt. 12:18-21

This quote of Old Testament scripture concerning the Lord Jesus Christ comes from the book of Isaiah, chapter forty-two, verses one through four.

Old Testament Quotations in the New Testament, Part 34

‘But the righteousness based on faith speaks thus, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’ (that is, to bring Christ down), or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart– that is, the word of faith which we are preaching” ’ Romans 10:6-8

The apostle Paul, in his letter to the Roman church, has just finished pouring out the concern of his heart for his Jewish brethren who still haven’t come to grips with the truth of faith in the LORD’s Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Old Testament Quotations in the New Testament, Part 32

“Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; AND A MAN’S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD.” Matthew 10:34-36

This Old Testament quote by our Lord comes from the book of Micah, chapter seven.

Old Testament Quotations in the New Testament, Part 30

‘And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain– for He says, “At the acceptable time I listened to you, and on the day of salvation I helped you”; behold, now is “the acceptable time,” behold, now is “the day of salvation” ‘ 2 Cor. 6:1 & 2

The quote by the apostle Paul above is from the inspired text of Isaiah the prophet, the Messianic prophet of the Old Testament.

Old Testament Quotations in the New Testament, Part 29

“…as it is written in the Law of the Lord, ‘Every first born male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the LORD.’ ” Luke 2:23

This New Testament citation of an Old Testament quote in the inspired record of Luke comes most likely from Exodus 13:2: “Sanctify to Me every first-born, the first offspring of every womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and beast; it belongs to Me.” (NAS).
