“But God turned away and delivered them up to serve the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘It was not to Me that you offered victims and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, was it, O house of Israel? You also took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of the god Rompha, the images which you made to worship them. I also will remove you beyond Babylon.’ ” Acts 7:42, 43 (NAS)
This quote by Steven as recorded by Luke under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, comes primarily from the book of Amos, chapter five.
“Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth, each one of you, with his neighbor, for we are members of one another.” Ephesians 4:25
In our text above, the apostle Paul, encouraging the Ephesian brethren, draws from the deep well of the inspired exhortations of the prophet Zechariah.
“It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught of God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.” John 6:45 (NAS)
Jesus, in His great discourse at Capernaum on the true bread of life (i. e., Himself), quotes from the prophet Isaiah. The citation of the prophet’s utterance is a partial quote from Isaiah 54:13.
“And how shall they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring glad tidings of good things!’ ” Romans 10:15 (NAS)
The apostle Paul, here in this juncture of his inspired epistle to the Roman brethren (and us!), cites another quote from the messianic prophet of the Old Testament, Isaiah.
“And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit.” And having said this, He breathed His last.” Luke 23:46 (NAS)
Luke’s account of Jesus’ death is the only one that records the complete last statement made by our Lord before breathing His last, and as Matthew pens, yielding “up His spirit.” (Matt. 27:50b)
“But God spoke to this effect, that his offspring would be aliens in a foreign land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years. ‘And whatever nation to which they shall be in bondage I Myself will judge,’ said God, ‘and after that they will come out and serve Me in this place.’ ” Acts 7:6-7
God’s plans fully revealed in the New Testament, as evangelist Steve Doty has remarked, cast a long shadow into the Old Testament.
“And again Isaiah says, ‘There shall come the root of Jesse, and He who arises to rule over the Gentiles, in Him shall the Gentiles hope.’ ” Romans 15:12
The inspired apostle Paul quotes from the book of Isaiah, the eleventh chapter, verse ten, relating the mercy of God being extended to the Gentiles through the root of Jesse, the one known as Jesus Christ.
“But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, that, just as it is written, ‘Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.’ ” 1 Cor. 1:30-31
The apostle’s inspired penning of this Old Testament quote is from the book of Jeremiah, the ninth chapter, verse twenty-four.
“Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its environs, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the magi. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, ‘A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; and she refused to be comforted, because they were no more.’ ” Matthew 2:18
This Old Testament quote by Matthew, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is drawn from Jeremiah 31:15. The NAS version of this verse reads, “Thus says the LORD, ‘A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.’ ”
“Behold, My Servant whom I have chosen; My Beloved in whom My soul is well-pleased; I will put My Spirit upon Him, and He shall proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not quarrel, nor cry out; nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets. A battered reed He will not break off, and a smoldering wick He will not put out, until He leads justice to victory. And in His name the Gentiles will hope.” Matt. 12:18-21
This quote of Old Testament scripture concerning the Lord Jesus Christ comes from the book of Isaiah, chapter forty-two, verses one through four.
